Whetu Haanraads. Patio & Pergola. March 16th , 2017.
An awning can be either fixed or retractable. A fixed awning, as its name suggests, stays in the same position all the time. It is usually some type of shade cloth fixed to a permanent frame of steel or aluminium. Retractable awnings can be swiftly stowed away, and are available in either powered or manually operated versions. In climates where permanent awnings must be dismantled at the approach of winter and erected again in spring, retractable awnings, which can be left in their cassette all year round, are especially useful.
If the space is small, and all you intend is a grill and a place to eat, you're practically done. If you can only do the basics now, but have intentions of bigger and better add-ons in the future, plan for them now. Make the backyard patio design large enough to include the desired features when you can afford them.
Only by careful research of the many designs available and the many materials available can you find the pergola which fits your requirements. Once you have chosen your matching design you have to follow the instructions carefully. Allthough it is indeed a labour of love, the rewards are worth it. Building your pergola requires perseverance and planning.
Next, measure and mark the region that you will be paving. Allow an extra 6-8 inches beyond the furthest dimensions of the patio to provide a firm base for the entire area of pavers and to allow for minor adjustments during the laying and cutting in of the pavers. Place stakes at the edges of the markings and attach a string line to the stakes at the final height.
